Published on

It is important to form a good foundation and it all starts with your idea, by setting out a simple well thought out idea, it will help shape your vision moving forward. Your idea can always change and evolve, but without a clear understanding of what, why and who for, you can easily lose sight of what you are trying to achieve. So here are some tips to help you clarify and develop your idea.

Put your idea into words

Try to define your new idea in one short and concise sentence.

Put your imagination to work

Even if you cannot draw make a rough sketch of how it looks and works.

Don’t go overboard too early

Designing a product is about evolution, define your idea with just enough features to satisfy early customers, this is called the “minimum viable product” (MVP).

“A minimum viable product (MVP) is a development technique in which a new product or website is developed with sufficient features to satisfy early adopters. The final, complete set of features is only designed and developed after considering feedback from the product's initial users.” The other benefit of producing an MVP is you can use feedback from your customers to develop future features they want.

What problem does it solve and for who

It all starts with an idea (your "what"). You may think having an idea is all you need, but you should also know who you’re creating it for and why. Knowing your "why" will be the driving force behind turning your idea into a reality. Without a purpose, you may give up when the first obstacle gets in your way.

With these simple steps, you should have formed a clear idea in written and visual forms to help you understand and be able to communicate your idea to others, there should be an awareness of who your target market is and why they need your product.
